A free online teleprompter with mirror mode and no sign-up
If you need a teleprompter for a video, a speech or a live stream, and you don't want another app subscription, open Teleprompter. Paste your script, press Start, and it scrolls smoothly past a reading line at the speed you choose. It works on a laptop, tablet or phone, flips the text for prompter glass, and can record your camera while you read. It's a free alternative to apps like PromptSmart, and your script never leaves your device.
Step by step
- Open Teleprompter and paste or type your script in the big box. The line above it shows the word count and roughly how long it takes to read aloud. Click the title to name the script.
- On the right, under Prompter, set the speed, text size, line spacing, text width and where the reading line sits on the screen. Pick the colours (white on black is easiest to read) and a countdown of 0, 3, 5 or 10 seconds.
- Using prompter glass? Tick Mirror left–right. Tick Flip upside down only if your rig needs it.
- Press Start prompter. It opens full screen. Press Space or tap the text to start; the countdown runs, then the text scrolls.
- While reading: ↑ and ↓ change the speed, ← and → jump back or forward a couple of lines, + and − change the text size, and you can scroll with the mouse wheel or drag with a finger. The controls hide while it scrolls and come back when you move the mouse.
- To record yourself, press Camera, allow the camera, then press Record. Recording starts the countdown and the scroll. Press Record again to stop, and the video downloads.
- Press Esc or the × to go back to the editor. To start from the middle of the script, put the cursor on a line and press Ctrl+Enter.
Who it helps
- YouTubers and course creators recording talking-head videos on a laptop webcam: put the reading line near the top of the screen, close to the camera, so your eyes stay on the lens.
- People giving a speech from a tablet on a lectern, with a page-turner pedal to nudge the text when they slow down.
- Small studios with a beam-splitter prompter rig, who need mirrored text on a spare laptop or tablet without installing anything.
- Arabic speakers. Each paragraph reads in its own direction, so Arabic scripts run right to left, and you can mix Arabic and English lines in one script.
Why it's private
Teleprompter is a static page. Your scripts are saved in your browser's storage on your device and are never uploaded. The camera is only switched on when you press Camera, the picture is shown on your screen, and recordings are saved straight to your device. The page's security policy blocks it from sending data to other websites, and it works offline after the first visit.
Tips and limits
- Cues and emphasis: a line in square brackets, like
[smile]or[pause], shows small and dim so you don't read it out. Put**two stars**around words you want to stress; they show bold. - Several scripts: use New, the script list, Open .txt and Save .txt in the Scripts box. Deleting a script can be undone from the message that appears.
- No voice-following. The speed is fixed until you change it. Most people find a steady speed with small nudges works well.
- Recordings are WebM in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and usually MP4 in Safari. They contain the camera and microphone only, not the script.
- Phones: the screen is kept awake while the text scrolls in browsers that support it. Turn the phone sideways for longer lines.
FAQ
Is this teleprompter free?
Yes. There is no account, no subscription and no limit on scripts or recording length. It is a web page that runs in your browser.
Does it follow my voice?
No. Voice-following needs speech recognition, which in most browsers sends your audio to a server. This teleprompter never sends anything anywhere, so you set the speed instead and adjust it with the arrow keys or the on-screen buttons while you read.
Can I use a Bluetooth remote or foot pedal?
Yes, if it sends arrow or Page Up / Page Down keys, which most presentation clickers and page-turner pedals do. Left / Page Up goes back, right / Page Down goes forward, and Space pauses.
Does it work with a teleprompter mirror or glass?
Yes. Press Mirror (or M) to flip the text left to right for beam-splitter glass. There is also an upside-down option for rigs that need it.
Can I record myself while reading?
Yes. Press Camera in the prompter, allow the camera, then press Record. The script stays on screen over your camera picture, and the video file is saved to your device when you stop. The script is not in the recording.
